Global Business Mobility

What is the Global Mobility route for UK visas?

This route is most suitable for businesses that are trying to set up operations in the UK or have arrangements with an outside supplier, or are looking to relocate personnel for specific business purposes.

The Global Mobility visas provide a route for international employees to be transferred to the UK under a lucrative arrangement or investment made by their foreign parent company.

How can I get a Global Mobility visa?

Organisations who are from outside the UK and wish to establish a presence or relocate workers to the UK may take advantage of the Global Business Mobility visa, which provides five options:

  • A senior or Specialist Worker visa enables you to enter or remain in the UK to engage in an eligible occupation with your employer's UK office.
  • A Graduate Trainee visa permits you to enter or stay in the United Kingdom to work with your employer's British division.
  • A secondment Worker visa is appropriate when you are being relocated to the United Kingdom by your foreign employer to take up an eligible position with a different organisation.
  • If you have a contract to provide services covered by a valid international trade agreement to a British company, you may be eligible to apply for a Service Supplier visa. This visa applies to employees of overseas companies and self-employed professionals overseas.
  • UK Expansion Worker visa permits you to travel to the United Kingdom to establish a branch of an outside business that has not yet commenced operations in the UK.

The type of Global Mobility visa you can apply for depends on the sponsoring entity status, the first three options are suitable for someone sponsored by a company already present in the UK, and the other two options are suitable for someone sponsored by a company without a presence in the UK.

Senior or Specialist Worker route

This visa enables you to enter or remain in the UK to engage in an eligible occupation with your employer's UK office.

To be eligible for a Senior or Specialist Worker visa, you must:

  • be a current employee of an organisation licensed by the Home Office as a sponsor,
  • hold a certificate of Sponsorship issued by your employer stating the details of the job you will do in the UK,
  • do a job that is on the list of accepted professions,
  • earn a minimum annual salary of £42,400, and
  • satisfy the English language requirements.

Your sponsor, or your employer, will present you with an electronic record, known as a 'certificate of sponsorship', which will include details of the work you will be doing in the UK. This is not in a paper document.

To complete the visa application, you must have the reference number found on your certificate of Sponsorship. This Application must be submitted within three months of receiving the certificate.

If you make less than £73,900 annually, you must have been employed by your overseas employer for a minimum of 12 months. There is no time limit if you're earning a yearly salary of £73,900 or more.

Graduate Trainee route

This visa allows you to enter or stay in the United Kingdom to work with your employer's British division. To be eligible for this visa, you must be enrolled in a graduate training program for a managerial or specialist position.

To receive a Graduate Trainee visa, you must already be employed by a company approved by the Home Office to sponsor you and have been employed by them outside the UK for a minimum of 3 months before your Application. Your employer must provide a 'certificate of sponsorship' with details of the work you will be doing in the UK. Furthermore, the job must feature on the list of eligible occupations, and you must be earning a minimum of £23,100 annually.

Secondment Worker route

The Secondment Worker visa is appropriate when you are being relocated to the United Kingdom by your foreign employer as part of a high-value contract with a UK-based organisation. This visa allows you to take up an eligible position within the UK-based organisation.

You must have been employed by a foreign company with a Home Office-recognised agreement with the UK sponsor for a minimum period of 12 months before arriving in the UK.

To apply for the Secondment Worker visa, you must have a Certificate of Sponsorship that is valid, issued by a UK based employer who has been registered with the Home Office to sponsor a Secondment Worker. Additionally, your overseas employer must have a high-value contract registered with the Home Office. A high-value contract under this category means at least £50 million.

Service Supplier route

If you have a contract to provide services covered by a valid international trade agreement to a British company, you may be eligible to apply for a Service Supplier visa. This visa applies to both employees of overseas companies and self-employed professionals based overseas.

To qualify for a Service Supplier visa, you must fulfil the following criteria:

  • Be employed by an international business or an independent service provider based abroad. You need at least 12 months of employment in this capacity before your Application.
  • You have been issued with a Certificate of Sponsorship to provide a service under a contract that is covered by a valid international trade agreement by your UK-based employer.
  • You have relevant qualifications and relevant expertise, or your job is eligible under this category.

UK Expansion route

UK Expansion Worker visa permits you to travel to the United Kingdom to establish a branch of an outside business that has not yet commenced operations in the UK. This is a temporary visa that allows senior or specialised employees to come to the UK to help with the company’s expansion.

The UK Expansion Worker visa requires you to have a certificate of Sponsorship from your employer, to have already worked for them outside of the UK 12 months unless you are earning over £73,900 or if you are a Japanese citizen working for a Japanese company, your job must be from the list of eligible occupations while your salary is £42,400 or the “going rate” for your job if this is higher.

You can remain in the UK for a maximum period of either 12 months from the beginning of your job as indicated on your certificate of Sponsorship, or the duration specified on your certificate of Sponsorship plus 14 days, whichever is shorter.

I have a Global Business Mobility visa; can I bring my family to the UK?

Those applying for a Global Business Mobility visa may bring along their partner and any dependent children. However, for the partner of the main visa holder to be able to travel to the UK through this route, certain requirements must be met, such as being in an eligible relationship and having the financial means to do so.
